The Department of Tropical Disease Biology has a great opportunity for two experienced Post-Doctoral Research Associates, with interests in schistosomiasis, to join the LSTM teams based in UK with regular travel to Malawi.
The two posts are funded by The Wellcome Trust and The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), through The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) using the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) Funding. It helps to build the portfolio of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) research within the LSTM and the Malawi-Liverpool-Malawi-Clinical Research Programme (MLW-CRP).
You will be responsible for a variety of research tasks associated with a 4-year Wellcome Trust Joint Investigator Award to Prof. J.R. Stothard (LSTM) and Dr. J. Musaya (MLW-CLRP). This study explores the importance and consequences of hybridization of human and animal schistosomes in Malawi, specifically in Mangochi and Nsanje Districts. This OneHealth investigation includes inspection of schistosomes in people, snails and livestock.
The first PDRA position will provide wide ranging epidemiological support in the following categories: organizing/participating in fieldwork (with focus on the human longitudinal cohort), characterization of infections, parasites and snails with molecular methods and conducting multivariable statistical analyses.
The second PDRA position will provide wide ranging epidemiological support in the following categories: organizing/participating in fieldwork (with focus on livestock sampling), characterization of infections, parasites and snails with molecular methods and conducting multivariable statistical analyses.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assist in all project objectives and activities to carry out cutting-edge (molecular) epidemiological research and ensure coherent multi-disciplinarity with crosstalk between human, livestock and snail themes.
Project administration to include field and laboratory logistics, assisting in the preparation of project reports to appropriate stakeholders.
Produce, disseminate, and track research outputs, inclusive of drafting scientific manuscripts for peer-review in leading epidemiological journals.
Contribute to laboratory and departmental activities, providing research skills mentoring to group members in UK and Malawi.
Supervise undergraduate/postgraduate project students.
(For a full list of essential and desirable criteria please refer to the job description and person specification)
The ideal candidates:
