LSTM is a world-renowned institution with a strong track record in high quality medical research, postgraduate training and technical assistance related to tropical countries. We have a research portfolio of over £250m, close to 600 staff and numerous postgraduate courses, from Diploma to PhD level. LSTM has a centre of excellence of international standing, as demonstrated in its 2014 Research Excellent Framework performance and its portfolio of activities ranges from basic drug discovery through to large drug trials, health service research and research synthesis.
LSTM has important strategic partnerships, such as the Wellcome Trust Tropical Centre and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme of Clinical Tropical Research and works in collaboration with other UK Universities including Liverpool, Warwick and Lancaster.
The GHTU is a strategic unit within the Department of Clinical Sciences with a remit to provide expert statistical and epidemiological advice to support the design and implementation of trials and large analytical and observational studies. The unit plays a strategic role to ensure trials are conducted at high quality, are able to influence international policies and to benefit populations of resource-poor countries.
Clinical trials are an area of major expansion for LSTM and this is an exciting time to join us. The appointee will join a highly motivated and competitive multidisciplinary team addressing high-burden diseases, including among others HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, neglected and emerging tropical diseases and respiratory infections in low and middle-income countries. The focus is on phase II/III and large-scale global health trials which range from new diagnostics, treatments and vaccines to strategies of health care delivery.
The successful candidate will contribute to the design of trials and quality observational studies, support the development and deployment of statistical tools applicable to a broad range of clinical and laboratory-based research and conduct analyses of data. You will operate in a multi-disciplinary team comprising clinical and basic scientists with the support of professors and senior lecturers in statistics, mathematicians and epidemiologists based at LSTM and partner institutions worldwide.
The appointee will be expected to provide statistical support, training, and advice on study design, statistical analysis and scientific paper/report writing to the School research community and occasionally to postgraduate students.
You will have the opportunity to develop your own areas of research interest and to focus on specific areas of work to complement the unit’s expertise. The GHTU encourage a flexible approach to working and this role could be remote working for the right candidate so non-Liverpool based candidates are encouraged to apply.
