Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Tryp-Elim partnership brings together leading research (LSTM, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp) and implementation organisations (PATH) with the National Programme for the Control of Human African Trypanosomiasis (PNLTHA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC). This partnership, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF),aims to eliminate sleeping sickness as a public health problem in DRC through a combination of case detection, treatment and vector control. LSTM is the technical lead partner for vector control, with particular emphasis on the use of Tiny Targets. We are recruiting two Programme Officers to work closely with the Programme Manager, to support the operational and technical implementation of tsetse control activities.
Based in Liverpool, the Programme Officers will liaise with the partners in the TrypElim-Bandundu consortium to provide technical support, supervise field teams and deliver training to PNLTHA as part of the capacity strengthening programme to implement large-scale tsetse control operations. They will also contribute to national and international scientific meetings related to the control of human African trypanosomiasis and represent the project at meetings with partners, funding bodies and researchers.
The applicant must hold a Master's degree in a relevant field and have excellent knowledge of written and conversational French. You must possess knowledge of disease control systems in Africa as well as designing and assessing complex interventions. Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering training courses is as essential as field work experience in Africa, or other resource-poor setting.
Well-developed research, numeracy and statistical analysis skills with the ability to present research findings are critical to the post. You must be able to achieve agreed research objectives, develop effective working relationships across diverse cultures and work as an integral and cooperative member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. In addition to the above, if you have previously worked on insect control programmes, national disease control programmes or been part of a NGO/ humanitarian organisation, it will be advantageous to your application.
