Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Tryp-Elim partnership brings together leading research (LSTM, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp) and implementation organisations (PATH) with the National Programme for the Control of Human African Trypanosomiasis (PNLTHA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This partnership, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), aims to eliminate sleeping sickness as a public health problem in DRC through a combination of case detection, treatment and vector control. LSTM is the technical lead partner for vector control, with particular emphasis on the use of Tiny Targets. The Capacity Research Unit's (CRU) multi-disciplinary team in the Department of International Public Health at LSTM is engaged in strengthening the capacity of the national tsetse control programme to plan and manage tsetse control operations at full country scale.
The CRU is recruiting a Research Assistant (RA) OR Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to support the project team in the design and implementation of high quality research. The post holder will liaise with programme funders, project partners and PNLTHA to convene capacity strengthening action plan workshops for central, provincial and health zone levels. You will conduct interviews, focus group discussions and surveys to identify obstacles and good practice in implementation of action plans and actively participate in drafting publications based on research findings. In addition, you will also contribute towards the teaching and support of postgraduate research.
It is essential to hold a PhD to apply as a PDRA or a Masters degree for the RA post, along with understanding of capacity strengthening and health systems programmes and knowledge of disease control programmes in low and middle-income countries. Demonstrable experience of working in complex projects, building effective working relationships with multiple partners in low and middle-income countries and designing data collection tools, conducting interviews, analysing data and presenting findings will be core to your application.
Your ability to deal with people across disciplines and cultures, taking responsibility and ownership for problems and following them through to resolution as well as written and oral fluency in French is essential to the post. Though the post is based Liverpool, you must be willing and able to travel occasionally to remote regions in the DRC.
