LSTM is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases, with the primary aim of promoting improved health worldwide, particularly for the communities of the less developed resource-poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Department of Vector Biology at LSTM is an international leader in the control of vector borne disease, and at the forefront in developing novel strategies for vector control, particularly in response to the rise of insecticide resistance in disease vectors.
With new funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, we are developing entomological indicators to assess the public health impacts of next generation long-lasting insecticidal nets. Within this project, we have an opportunity fora highly motivated and experienced vector biologist to join our research team where they will develop, evaluate and implement robust phenotypic and molecular assays to monitor insecticide resistance in the field. The work will be undertaken with co-investigators at Imperial College London, and in Tanzania and Burkina Faso.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Biological Sciences, preferably in vector biology, with appropriate experience and a record of performance in their field. The post requires a good understanding of molecular biology, including experience of developing and applying molecular assays, experience in developing laboratory protocols and working to strict health and safety regulations/guidelines. Prior experience working with insects would be advantageous.
The successful candidate will join LSTM's large, dynamic and diverse team pursuing practical solutions to the challenge of insecticide resistance, and their extensive international network of collaborators. The post will be based in Liverpool, but will require some field work in Tanzania, Burkina Faso and Benin.
Please note that the successful candidate will be required to undergo a DBS and/or other international criminal record check prior to appointment and at regular points during employment. The outcome must be satisfactory to LSTM, as the duties of this post will involve direct and/or indirect contact with vulnerable adults and/or children.
