Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the healthneeds of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Department of International Public Health is seeking a Senior Research Associate or Senior Clinical Research Associate to join a new Group engaged in conducting research on the prevention and management of HIV-infection and non-communicable diseases in Africa. The aim of the group is to conduct rigorous clinical and public health research that informs health policy and clinical practice in Africa in the control of major chronic disease conditions. Our research partners are based in both Africa and Europe and comprise clinical researchers, epidemiologists, health economists, social scientists and health systems researchers.
The research is being conducted in Tanzania and Uganda, where we partner with health care providers, senior health programme managers and policy makers. This Group is funded by the UK National Institutes of Health and by a Horizon 2020 award from the European Union until the end of 2022. The vision is for the programme to expand well beyond 2023, in both scope of activities and scale.
The Senior Research Associate or Senior Clinical Research Associate will be based in Liverpool and contribute towards the clinical trials either underway, or planned in persons with HIV-infection, diabetes or hypertension. These include a phase II Investigation Medical Product (IMP) trial that will require travel to the clinical centres in Tanzania and careful monitoring of the implementation of the research, monitoring of safety and clinical events and recording of data. The research team is large, multidisciplinary and has a strong mentorship and staff development culture. It is a unique opportunity for someone to get first-hand experience of clinical research in a global health environment.
We seek someone, ideally clinically qualified, and with a desire to pursue a career in research to develop fellowship and other grant applications. We may consider applicants for a shorter duration, who are active in clinical research, but seek a career break to experience global health research. Our preference is for applicants to have clinical experience in managing diabetes and other conditions or have substantial experience of clinical research, ideally in a clinical trial. You must also have excellent communications and team working skills and ideally some experience of working in a low-resource clinical setting. Non-clinically qualified applicants who have extensive experience of clinical trials will also be considered.
See the job description for further details. Interested persons may contact Prof Jaffar informally before application for discussion (shabbar.jaffar@lstmed.ac.uk).
Please note that the successful candidate will be required to undergo a DBS and/or other international criminal record check prior to appointment and at regular points during employment. The outcome must be satisfactory to LSTM, as the duties of this post will involve direct and/or indirect contact with vulnerable adults and/or children.
