The Hughes Lab based in the Departments of Vector Biology and Tropical Disease Biology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is collaborating with the University of Liverpool and the University of Cambridge to develop novel and cutting-edge methods to genetically manipulate insects. Funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the project brings together Drs Alistair Darby, Frank Jiggins and Grant Hughes from across three Universities. The project will expand the capacity of the ground-breaking 'ReMOT Control' technology to edit the genome of mosquitoes and other insects without the need to microinject embryos. The team is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to drive the project forward.
With a PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry or mosquito biology/ entomology, you will be familiar with approaches used for gene editing or altering transcription such as CRISPR-Cas9 gene knock out and knock in and RNAi. Experience with protein expression and purification will be an added advantage to your application. Evidence of working with or rearing mosquitoes or other insects and an understanding of their reproductive biology would be desirable but is not essential.
Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the LSTM is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/ resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics. LSTM has a long track record in mosquito transgenesis and has several laboratories actively researching this field.
